Looks to be the best bet of the day. Put up a huge performance on Oaks day when coming from last to just miss on the line. Has been a mare that has been a model of consistency for connections. Only two times over this distance (2400m) has resulted in a win and a very close (2nd) on this Kensington circuit. Ready for this distance and a strong showing is expected on the cards. Hard to beat.

Going through the grades nicely this time in after being competitive with some of the best three-year-old fillies last season. Both runs this campaign have been solid and she goes well on the Kensington track. Flew late from last to get the decision last time (1400m) and the step up to (1800m) should suit her ideally now being third run into her preparation. Hard to beat.

He is clearly the class horse in this field. Drops back in class of his recent effort when working home strongly to run fourth at Flemington on Cup Day. Extra distance suits. The stable has always had a good opinion of him and he is ready to get back into the winners circle. Big chance.

Aegean Sea to kick-start Conners’ 2YO team

Clarry Conners is adamant there is strength in his team of two-year-olds despite an absence of runners in Sydney’s early-season juvenile races.

“I’ve had some nice babies that have trialled and I’ve just wanted to give them time. They’ve nearly all been shinsore or had some other niggling problem,” Conners said.

“I don’t know if they’re softer horses nowadays.”

One youngster that is resilient is Aegean Sea, a daughter of Beneteau, the Arrowfield stallion which will have only two crops of foals go the races after his death in January, 2013.

Aegean Sea will be Conners’ first juvenile runner in Sydney this season when she makes her debut in Saturday’s Surf Meets The Turf Plate (1000m) at Randwick.

Second pick in early markets behind Godolphin filly Italy, Aegean Sea scored a smart win at her most recent barrier trial when she raced on the speed.

Surprisingly, the filly is a recent addition to Victory Lodge and has made it to the races in her first preparation.

“She came to me late, she wasn’t in my first batch of horses so this is her first real bout in the stables,” Conners said.

“She’s come a long way.”

Beneteau, who was placed in the 2010 Blue Diamond Stakes, has already produced Maribyrnong Plate winner Prompt Return.

The Randwick race has been reduced to 10 starters with the scratching of $1.3 million yearling Grand Cross.

Complacent nearing return from injury

A horse considered one of the brightest talents in Godolphin’s Australian team is slowly building towards a comeback from injury.

Group One winner Complacent has not raced since his second in the 2013 Victoria Derby having been ruled out of racing this year with a tendon strain.

Complacent is back under saddle at Godolphin’s private training complex outside of Sydney as he continues his rehabilitation.

“The injury prevented him from running in the autumn and spring but he’s had a really long and gradual, controlled rehabilitation program,” Godolphin’s racing manager Jason Walsh said.

“We’re happy with him. He’s back under saddle and we’re hoping to progress through to the races this preparation.

“Hopefully he’s up and going in the early part of next year and hopefully some of the autumn features during The Championships might be on the radar for him.

“We’re crossing all our fingers and toes to get him back because he’s a really talented stayer and a high quality horse – one of the leading lights of our team if he can stay sound.”

When Complacent suffered the injury, Darley’s then head trainer Peter Snowden lamented the misfortune for the horse he labelled the best staying prospect he had trained.

Walsh agrees.

“I think in my five years here he’s probably the most talented staying prospect we’ve had,” he said.

Complacent burst onto the scene last year with wins in the Gloaming Stakes and Group One Spring Champion Stakes in consecutive starts after breaking his maiden in a race at Hawkesbury.

He then finished second to Polanski in the Victoria Derby at his sixth start.

Work on a water walker has formed part of his treatment.

“We’re happy enough with where he’s at at the moment and we’ll start to click him up a bit through December,” Walsh said.

“Hopefully he’s up to race pace in January and off to a racecourse in February. That would be a fantastic result for the team.”

Waterhouse after second Ballarat Cup

Group Three placegetter Pheidon will be out to give Gai Waterhouse her second Ballarat Cup.

Waterhouse won the Listed race last year with The Offer who went on to win three races during the autumn, culminating in the Sydney Cup.

The Offer was then installed the Melbourne Cup favourite before the trainer Waterhouse the stayer a week before the race.

Pheidon was given a masterful ride by Craig Williams when touched out in the final few strides by Zabisco in Saturday’s Group Three Eclipse Stakes.

A winner over 2040m at Moonee Valley on October 24, Pheidon is one of 35 entries for the 2200m Ballarat Cup, which for the first time this year will be the stand-alone feature Saturday meeting in Victoria.

Epingle, runner-up to Au Revoir in Saturday’s Zipping Classic, is one of three nominations for trainer Michael Kent who also has Scratchy Bottom and You Think So.

A colic attack which happened after he arrived on course for the Sandown Cup forced the scratching of Massiyn but the Lloyd Williams-owned galloper has been nominated along with Count Of Limonade, a member of OTI Racing, who was withdrawn from the Zipping Classic due to the firmness of the track.

With international gallopers, OTI Racing-owned Renew and Au Revoir continuing the success of imported gallopers by winning the two staying races at Sandown on Saturday, Tony McEvoy has former French galloper Sysmo among nominations.

The Ballarat Cup is one of 10 races to be held on Saturday with the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) also a highlight.

The race, open to Magic Millions graduates, gives the Victorian trained two-year-olds the experience of racing the clockwise direction before the Magic Millions meeting at the Gold Coast in January.

Prompt Return, an impressive winner of the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) on November 8 will be out to enhance her Magic Millions hopes along with Old Trieste who finished second to that colt at Flemington.

Since returning from spell has been ultra impressive with three consecutive wins from only his four starts.

Latest win over the mile (Warwick Farm) had it won from along way from home when circling the field to swoop down the outside to win comfortably.

Deserve a crack at Saturday class now, stable do know how to place there horses to advantage. Inform jockey Blake Shinn rides who has been on his back at his last two wins. Hard to beat.

NEXT BEST
Race 5 No: 6 MALICE

(WINNER – $2.70)
Racing well this preparation with a good second behind Best Case last start when he had a few of his main rivals well behind him.

Should get a good run just off the pace and take plenty of holding out. Been racing consistently and stepping up to 1900m is a plus while drawn to get a perfect run. Looks ideally placed to be winning for the Godolphin stable.

Ready to get back into the winners circle.

Race 3 No: 1 WINE TAILS

(PLACED – 2nd $1.40)
Follow up from his luckless run over the Flemington carnival when strung up behind horses and didn’t get a crack at them in the straight.

Go on previous Rosehill win when ridden a treat camping on the leaders back deep into the straight and waited for the run to present, when it did sprinted quickly to get the decision.

Looks better placed here drawing a middle gate where he can settle two or three pairs back in the run and be saved for the last crack at them in the straight. Close enough inside the last furlong will be charging home late.

Sydney leading jockey in James McDonald takes the reins is a real positive. Inform Chris Waller stable.

Scratched from Rosehill to be saved for this race.

Ready to make amends.

NEXT BEST
Race 2 No: 2 PORNICHET

(WINNER – $2.30)
Lightly raced French import galloper from the Gai Waterhouse stable. Looked to be a touch unlucky first up when he couldn’t get clear running room in the straight to be beaten a touch over a length to run (4th) to Hucklebuck.

Big improver here with the extra fitness on his side with that run under his belt.

Form has been franked since with Hucklebuck winning again (Group 1 Emirates Stakes).

Stable has had a quite Melbourne Spring carnival and is ready to get back into the winners circle.

Win won’t shock.

Resuming for the Chris Waller stable. Trialled twice recently (Rosehill – Warwick Farm) winning both without being placed under much pressure. Coolmore team settles Adelaide future

Cox Plate winner Adelaide will remain in Australia to be prepared for an autumn campaign.

Keeping to a plan revealed before Adelaide’s last-to-first Cox Plate triumph last month, the four-year-old will go into leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller’s Rosehill stable and will target the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.

Since Adelaide defeated Australia’s best weight-for-age horses at Moonee Valley there had been speculation the entire would continue to be trained by Aidan O’Brien in Ireland.

But Coolmore’s Australian spokesman James Bester confirmed on Wednesday that Waller would prepare Adelaide for The Championships in Sydney.

Waller said he had already inspected Adelaide at Coolmore’s Hunter Valley stud.

“I’ve been up to see the horse. He’s a fantastic individual,” Waller said.

“They put him out into the paddock while I was there and he moved so effortlessly. He’s a very athletic horse.”

Waller intends to meet with O’Brien at the champion trainer’s Ballydoyle training set-up in Ireland to discuss Adelaide’s Australian campaign.

“I want to have a chat to Aidan to find out what we need to do to have him ready without over-racing him,” Waller said.
