The Melbourne Cup Carnival shifts gear with what is arguably the most outstanding day of racing on the Australasian calendar: AAMI Victoria Derby Day. The feature race of the day, the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby, boasts an impressive prize money of over $1 million.

Considered by many to be the most prestigious day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, AAMI Victoria Derby Day embodies a world of glamour and sophistication – only to be matched by an impressive day of all black type races.

All the action and excitement starts with high racing stakes with four races at the elite Group 1 level. For the winners of the Longines Mackinnon Stakes and Lexus Stakes, it provides the opportunity for last-minute entry into the coveted Emirates Melbourne Cup field. The feature race of the day is the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby boasting impressive prize money of over $1 million.

The fashion stakes are equally high with the start of the Myer Fashions on the Field competition for women and men. This is the day for classic elegance, and sets the pace for the entire week.

As the curtain raiser of this unrivalled week, AAMI Victoria Derby Day is abuzz with anticipation for what Flemington has in store for the week ahead.

FLEMINGTON – AAMI VICTORIA DERBY DAY MAIL
Weather: Showers, Track: Good 3, Pen: 4.85, Rail: TRUE

Race 1 – 11:45AM Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)
No: 5 MONTAUK – Chris Waller loves to target this race (Kermadec) 2014 winner. Got back into the winners circle with strong Randwick over the mile. Cox Plate winning jockey in Hugh Bowman jumps back on, looks to travel mid field and be poised to strike on straightening. The big open surfaces of Flemington will suit. This colt is improving with more racing and he does appeal here. Strong Chance.

Race 2 – 12:20PM Mumm Wakeful Stakes (2000m)
No: 2 DAWNIE PERFECT – Big win in the Ethereal Stakes when trapped deep throughout the run to come away for a strong win. Bred to stay a trip, maybe looking for the Oaks trip now. Filly that is improving with racing. Trainer, jockey and owner know a thing or two about winning three year old classics at this carnival. Major player.

Race 3 – 1:00PM Guvera Stakes (1400m)
No: 12 ARTLEE – Has a great record at this distance and ran a big race fresh in the Lightning Stakes at Randwick. With a soft run midfield on the fence will get his chance to finish it off late. Will love the big open spaces here of Flemington. Will be closing late. Go Close.

Race 4 – 1:40PM Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m)
No: 10 MOGADOR – Firstly we believe Exosphere will be hard to beat if he can bring his Sydney form to Flemington. Looking for value and we are tipping his stablemate in Mogador who hit the line hard last start to just miss narrowly. Open to more improvement being his third run into this present campaign, he’ll be back off the pace and be charging home late. He did beat the older horse first up at Warwick Farm over the 1000m. Win won’t shock.

Race 5 – 2:25PM Lexus Stakes (2500m)
No: 6 HAVANA COOLER – Import that keeps improving with recent racing and the form reads well out of the Metropolitan. His run was a lot better then it looked coming home on the worst part of the track along the fence to hit the line full of running to grab a share of the minor prize money. If he can be a touch closer in the run from the good gate he’ll take a power of beating. Ready to win.

Race 6 – 3:05PM Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000m)
No: 4 PORNICHET – Worked home ok last week in the Cox Plate to finish up behind the placegetters. Looks to get a charm run in the race and will get every chance in the run. If he hasn’t done no harm from last weeks run can see him being the finish. Both Totes in an open race.

Race 7 – 3:50PM AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m)
No: 3 KIA ORA KOUTOU – Unbeaten at his four starts in the West. Latest win was strong against the older horses over the 2200m. Has been kept up to the mark for this with strong trial win at Lark Hill. Has drawn favourably to receive the perfect run of the race with the rails draw. Only just needs to measure up to this class to be a serious challenger in this year’s race. Will be strong late is another plus. Hard to beat.

Race 8 – 4:35PM Myer Classic (1600m)
No: 13 SLIGHTLY SWEET – Worked home last start along the fence without much room along rails to just finish on the tail of the place-getters in the Tristarc Stakes. Suited up to the mile, at her only try at the distance she was a winner in stakes level. Will settle a touch of mid field only just needs clear running room in the straight she will give herself a great account. Worth a bet on both totes.

Race 9 – 5:20PM tab.com.au Stakes (1200m)
No: 5 DELECTATION – Ridden a treat and was beaten by a smart one in the Gilgai Stakes (Chautauqua). Saves his best for the straight and wasn’t far from a star last start. Sharp in a jump out throughout the week. He’s one of the hardest to beat.

Go Close.
