Welcome to OneSelection2Win Royal Ascot Racing Mail for the Final Day of the Carnival.

Approaching the final day we have had a profitable Royal Ascot carnival with 17.50pts in front coming into the final day. Let’s hope we can finish off with another winning day.

ROYAL ASCOT (UK)

CHESHAM STAKES (LISTED) (CLASS 1) (2YO ONLY)
RACE 1 – 2.30PM

ATR COMMENTS – CUNCO defied everything going wrong in the preliminaries on debut at Newbury to win going away and the fact he took an age to be pulled up suggests the extra furlong here will be no issue whatsoever. John Gosden won this race two years ago with Richard Pankhurst and the son of Frankel can maintain his unbeaten record. Frankel’s other runner Frankuus showed signs of inexperience on debut but there was plenty to like about his win last week at Haydock over 7f and he warrants plenty of respect. Churchill ran a race full of promise on debut at the Curragh and is bred to improve plenty for the step up in trip, while Magillen, Isomer and Admiralty Arch all have decent claims on the form they have shown so far.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – There’s a strong feeling that CHURCHILL will improve markedly for this longer trip being by Galileo, so he’s narrowly preferred to Cunco, another who was learning on the job first time and will relish the extra emphasis on stamina. Frankuus completes a strong hand for his sire in what looks a mouth-watering Chesham Stakes on paper.

OS2W SELECTION No: 3 CUNCO – Got Frankel’s career as a stallion off to perfect start at Newbury, learning throughout and only putting his seal on the race late. Will benefit from experience and extra 1f will be in his favour, so holds strong claims.

WOLFERTON HANDICAP (LISTED) (CLASS 1) (4YO PLUS)
RACE 2 – 3.05PM

ATR COMMENTS – Another opportunity can be handed to the consistent PACIFY, who picked up well at York last time and won’t mind the ground whichever way the weather turns. The four-year-old would be an emotional winner for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and looks to have the right profile for this contest. Not So Sleepy appears to have been prepared with this race in mind for quite some time, and represents a trainer who won this in 2008, while Maverick Wave doesn’t look like an obvious candidate, but must be respected for a trainer who has won this three times since 2011. The form of Sir Isaac Newton’s defeat to Portage doesn’t look too bad now, but he might need the ground to dry up much more than looks likely. Second Wave looks to be the Charlie Appleby second choice on jockey bookings but looks well treated under Adam Kirby, with Arthenus completing the list of likely contenders for his shrewd trainer.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – BEST OF TIMES boasts some good form and caught the eye on his return from a year off at Chester. He could be on a lenient mark and gets the vote in a typically-competitive renewal of this handicap. Oceanographer is another big player for Godolphin, while Maleficent Queen and Revolutionist are thriving winners who can’t be discounted.

OS2W SELECTION No: 12 OCEANOGRAPHER – Looks a promising sort, winning a couple of AW handicaps at up to 11f as 2015 ended and shaping well over further at Newmarket on return. Respected.

HARDWICKE STAKES (GROUP 2) (CLASS 1) (4YO PLUS)
RACE 3 – 3.40PM

ATR COMMENTS – Sir Michael Stoute holds a strong hand here as is so often the case in races of this nature. Both Dartmouth and Exosphere have been campaigned with typical aplomb and patience and there seems little to choose between the pair with Peslier and Moore booked. A victory for either would not surprise but HIGHLAND REEL may just represent a value option. The Ballydoyle inmate has been campaigned around the globe on his last half dozen starts and may appreciate the drop back to Group 2 level. His win in the 2015 Hong Kong Vase over Flintshire represents very strong form, a repeat of which would see him go close. Simple Verse will go close if back to her best of last term and Beautiful Romance appeals as a potential improver.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – EXOSPHERE was stepped up to this trip on his return in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and looked a totally different proposition, powering home in the final furlong to score. He escapes a penalty for that and is fancied to continue his improvement here with another success. The globe-trotting Highland Reel, the progressive Dartmouth and the fast-improving Almodovar head the list of dangers.

OS2W SELECTION No: 5 EXOSPHERE – High-class colt who showed much-improved form on his reappearance when taking 6-runner Grp 2 at Newmarket in April by 4 lengths from Simple Verse, and looks the one to beat on that form.

DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES (GROUP 1) (BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES & GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE) (CLASS 1) (4YO PLUS)
RACE 4 – 4.20PM

ATR COMMENTS – The ground looks to have gone against the foreign raiders in Gold-Fun, Holler and Undrafted. That said, they have already proven themselves on the world stage and if any were to handle the soft ground then they would be a danger to all. MAGICAL MEMORY has to reverse the Sprint Cup form with Twilight Son but the four-year-old looks to have improved in both starts this year, whereas the Henry Candy representative needs to improve upon his seasonal debut (where he was behind the selection). Suedois was only half a length behind Magical Memory in the Duke Of York, a top effort on just his second start for this yard, and he could reward each-way support. The Tin Man is another worthy of consideration as the son of Equiano keeps on progressing and he was not beaten far at all in the British Champions Sprint over C&D last October.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – The 4YO’S look strong and it is THE TIN MAN who has created the most striking impression with his commanding reappearance win at Windsor last month. He could be the answer. Magical Memory has also improved further this year, and isn’t passed over lightly, while Twilight Son is likely to be much more competitive than he was on his return at York last month.

OS2W SELECTION: 8 THE TIN MAN – Progressed rapidly at 3 yrs, and did so again showing high-class form in commanding reappearance win at Windsor last month. Could yet improve further still, and he has to be high on the shortlist.

WOKINGHAM STAKES (HERITAGE HANDICAP) (CLASS 2) (3YO PLUS)
RACE 5 – 5PM

ATR COMMENTS – Flash Fire got the better of the reopposing Mutawathea (second) when winning the Victoria Cup over a furlong further here last month but that came on good to firm so the ground must be a concern for his supporters, not to mention the drop back to 6f. Last year’s winner Interception is 5lb higher in the ratings this time around and needs to step up on recent form, while Spring Loaded has been in terrific form on the all-weather and is a big player under a nice weight if rain-softened ground doesn’t blunt that push-button turn of foot. Outback Traveller is no stranger to success at the Berkshire venue and is another to note, but BRANDO appears to boast a nice draw in stall 11 and, with winning form in the book on soft ground, Kevin Ryan’s charge has improved no end this season and a 4lb rise for his latest second-placed effort at York isn’t concerning given the form looks strong.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – The Robert Cowell-trained pair OUTBACK TRAVELLER and Toofi make most appeal in what is always one of the most competitive races of the season, with preference just going to the former. Lightly-raced 4-y-o Brando will be suited by the return to 6f and is another to consider, along with Spring Loaded, Ninjago and Buckstay.

OS2W SELECTION No: 20 BRANDO – Won 2 of his 3 starts as a 3-y-o in 2015 and picked up where he left off this time around, winning 5f Newmarket handicap on return and good second of 17 to Duke of Firenze at York. One for shortlist.
(PLACED 2ND)

QUEEN ALEXANDRA STAKES (CONDITIONS RACE) (CLASS 2) (4YO PLUS)
RACE 6 – 5.35PM

ATR COMMENTS – Willie Mullins has saddled two of the last four winners of this contest and the multiple Irish champion NH trainer appears to have two solid chances again with Simenon and CLONDAW WARRIOR. Returning from a 245-day break isn’t ideal for the former, but he knows what it takes to land this prize (won the 2012 renewal) and boasts Group 3-winning form. That said, his stablemate looks like the one that they all have to beat. This bombproof son of Overbury is equally as effective both on the Flat and over jumps and won the Ascot Stakes, under Ryan Moore, at this meeting 12 months ago. He has since posted a number of solid efforts, including a third-placed finish in the Scottish Champion Hurdle last time, and looks sure to be in the thick of things again. Oriental Fox was an impressive seven-length winner of this race last year and a promising comeback over 1m4f here last month will have put him spot on for another crack, while Sandro Botticelli drops down from Group 3 company and is sure to get a confident ride from Frankie Dettori. Amour de Nuit, Commissioned and Grumeti are others to keep an eye on.

TIMEFORM COMMENTS – ORIENTAL FOX was an impressive winner of this last year and holds sound claims of a repeat on the back of a good reappearance over shorter here last month, particularly as soft ground won’t faze him. The Willie Mullins pair Clondaw Warrior and 2012 winner Simenon are a couple of obvious threats. Amour de Nuit and Commissioned, who has his first run for Gordon Elliott here, complete the shortlist.

0S2W SELECTION No: 2 ARMOUR DE NUIT – Developed into a smart stayer last year. Made it 5 wins in last 7 starts when edging out Nearly Caught on Chelmsford reappearance and respected with further progress a distinct possibility.

HARBOUR WATCH – Acclamation x Gorband (WOODMAN) b 2009 16.1½hh

* Unbeaten Timeform Champion 2yo

* By Champion sire and sire of sires ACCLAMATION. His highest rated 2yo son.

* Out of a grand-daughter of the legendary FALL ASPEN, dam, grand-dam or third dam of 13 Gr.1 winners including 7 Champions. Half-brother to dual Gr.1 winner EUROPA POINT

* First two-year-olds in 2016 from a first book of 147 quality mares. His first yearlings averaged £37,000 for 64 yearlings sold (to 14/10/15 inc), 5x his stud fee.

Richard Hannon, trainer – “A magnificent looking specimen with an engine to match. He was right up there with the best horses that we have had here. We look forward to having some of Harbour Watch’s progeny back here at Herridge and if they prove half as good as he did we will have no complaints.”

Ryan Moore, jockey –
“He was very precocious with the perfect attitude and a powerful change of pace.”

Richard Hughes, trainer and former Champion Jockey – “He was one of the very rare horses I rode whose nose I could see whilst he galloped, such was his determination and will to win. He had the most brilliant attitude as well as loads of ability, we sadly never got to see how good he could have been. I was desperate to buy yearlings by him and have two here now broken and ridden away. Like their sire they have both shown great temperament and have a brilliant nature. I really like them.”
