FLEMINGTON – AAMI VICTORIA DERBY DAY MAIL – SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER

The Melbourne Cup Carnival shifts gear with what is arguably the most outstanding day of racing on the Australasian calendar: AAMI Victoria Derby Day. The feature race of the day, the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby, boasts impressive prize money of over $1 million.

Considered by many to be the most prestigious day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, AAMI Victoria Derby Day embodies a world of glamour and sophistication – only to be matched by an impressive day of all black type races.

All the action and excitement starts with high racing stakes with four races at the elite Group 1 level. The feature race of the day is the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby, the time-honoured classic staying test for three-year-olds which has been won in the past by the greats of the sport, including Poseidon, Tulloch, Mahogany, Efficient, and the immortal Phar Lap. Supporting this great race is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes which will see the three-year-olds burn up the turf over 1200m, the Group 1 Myer Classic for fillies and mares over 1600m, the newly christened and super competitive Group 1 Longines Mile under handicap conditions, and providing a note of intrigue, the Group 3 Lexus Stakes marks the last opportunity for horses to win their way into the final field for the Emirates Melbourne Cup.

As the curtain raiser of this unrivalled week, AAMI Victoria Derby Day is abuzz with anticipation for what Flemington has in store for the week ahead.

FLEMINGTON – AAMI VICTORIA DERBY DAY MAIL
Weather: Fine, Track: Good 4, Pen: 4.86, Rail: TRUE

Race 1 – 11:45AM Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)
No: 10 COMIN’ THROUGH – Lightly raced colt with a stack of upside. . The half-brother of Criterion has been impressive from only his 2 starts, ran brilliant closing sectionals last start and is obviously expected to go close. The stable know how to win this race as they did win it with Kermadec (2014). Go close.
(WINNER – $7.00)

Race 2 – 12:20PM Mumm Wakeful Stakes (2000m)
No: 4 SEBRING DREAM – Hit the line strongly at Caulfield when travelling deep. She’ll get back again and be charging at them late. Only 2 starts at this track has resulted in a win and a close 2nd. Ready to win.
(PLACED – 2ND)

Race 3 – 1:00PM Sensis Stakes (1100m)
No: 12 CHLOE IN PARIS – Fitter now for two runs off the long spell and was luckless last start. Open to a stack of improvement now 3rd up. Likes this track with 2 wins and placing from her only 3 starts here, she’ll run a big race at the nice eachway odds.
(UNPLACED)

Race 4 – 1.40PM Lexus Stakes (2500m)
No: 8 OCEANOGRAPHER (GB) – Late nomination for this race, but his Geelong Cup run is easily good enough as he did race a touch green in the straight to finish it off very nicely to run a very close placing. Suited on the big track, he’ll be charging home. Winning chance.
(WINNER – $2.90)

Race 5 – 2.25PM Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m)
No: 2 EXTREME CHOICE – He was devastating first up against the seasoned older horses in the Group I Moir Stakes. There’s plenty of quality in this race so whoever wins will be crowned the best 3YO Colt in the country. His only poor run was the Golden Slipper where he did have plenty of excuses. Looks to be very tough to beat. Hard to beat.
(UNPLACED)

Race 6 – 3:05PM Myer Classic (1600m)
No: 12 EURO ANGEL – Impressive winner at Caulfield when trapped wide to still rocket home to bring up her 3rd win from as many starts. The track and trip are ideal and this stage, exciting mare can continue on her upward spiral. The double figure odds on offer is very appealing. Both Totes.
(UNPLACED)

Race 7 – 3:50PM AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m)
No: 1 SACRED ELIXIR – Back to his best last week racing closer in the run with a perfect run and he’s racing like a true stayer. From the good gate he gets the run of the race, he’s clearly the one to beat.
(PLACED – 2ND)

Race 8 – 4:35PM Cantala Stakes (1600m)
No: 4 HE’S OUR ROKKII – He’s flying at present winning all 4 starts this time in and still gets in ok at the weights. Just needs to get luck early in the race to get cover from the gate he’ll be fighting out the finish again.
(UNPLACED)

Race 9 – 5:20PM TAB.com.au Stakes (1200m)
No: 11 SOUTHERN LEGEND – Looked to trial well down the straight against the classy three year olds, and on the minimum, his last start unplaced effort was a super pointer for this beaten 1.5 length carrying 58.5kg against Takedown & Our Boy Malachi I can see him running a very cheeky race. Winning chance.
(PLACED – 3RD)
